The senator representing Akwa Ibom South in the Red Chambers of the National Assembly, Distinguished Senator Nelson Effiong has proven his mettle as an experienced parliamentarian.. It would recalled that the Distinguished Senator is a former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during Obong Attah's administration..

If Senator Effiong was found wanting in law making then, one would naturally be disappointed in him being that, he is the only one from the state in the senate at the moment with prior legislative experience.. One therefore is not surprised that the Distinguished Senator is showing capacity in this regard..

As at today, Senator Effiong has to his credit, three bills and two motions on the floor of the Nigerian Senate.. The bills are:

1. A BILL FOR AN ACT TO MAKE PROVISIONS FOR SUPPRESSION OF SEA PIRACY AND TO PROVIDE FOR PUNISHMENT FOR THE OFFENSE OF SEA PIRACY AND FOR OTHER MATTERS CONNECTED THEREWITH..

2. A BILL FOR AN ACT TO REPEAL THE MARITIME ACADEMY OF NIGERIA ACT CAP 16. LAWS OF THE FEDERATION OF NIGERIA 1988, AND ESTABLISH FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF MARITIME STUDIES ORON, AND FOR RELATED MATTERS..

3. A BILL FOR AN ACT TO ESTABLISH THE NIGERIAN SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME 2016..
The motions include the following:

1. On May 14, 2016 Senator Nelson Effiong moved a motion on the need to punish building law violators in Nigeria..

3. On the 17th of March, 2016 Senator Nelson Effiong moved a motion on tightening security on our waterways, seas and canals to prevent robbery..

Expectedly, the three bills have gone through various stages of parliamentary procedures that will eventually lead to their final enactment.. Whereas the Sea Piracy Bill was read the second time and referred to committees on Navy, Judiciary and ICT, the Social Security Bill scaled its first reading..

Very gratifying is the fact that, the bill for the establishment of Federal University of Maritime Studies, Oron (FUMSO) has scaled many hurdles to the stage where the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND laid its report on the bill before the senate on Thursday June 8, 2017.. Hopefully, the FUMSO BILL will be passed on Tuesday 13 June, 2017..

Unlike the Okerenkoko Maritime University that came largely on the agitations of the Niger Delta Avengers, FUMSO came purely through the facilitation of Our Distinguished Senator.. This demonstrates clearly why #THEGOODOMENPROJECT and #ORONATIONLEADERSHIPANDBUSINESSROUNDTABLE has been in the vanguard of repeated agitations for effective representation across all facets of leadership in Oro Nation..

It takes capacity, competence, political sagacity and swiftness to be able to function effectively in a senate where professors, academic doctors and many others with intimidating credentials sit.. A situation where a people's representative cannot effectively articulate the needs and problems of his constituents due to literacy issues leaves the people without a voice..

As Distinguished Senator Nelson Effiong makes our faces beam with smiles in the first half of his first term in office, with renewed hope of having MAN, Oron upgraded to a full fledged university, our prayer is that God will strengthen him the more to embark on more people-oriented projects..

Oro Nation is proud of this beautiful feat by Distinguished Senator Effiong and looks forward to having more and better ones in the years to come..

Bravo Akangkang Okpo!!!
