The
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has held the 2017 Batch B Pre-mobilization
Workshop in Uyo with the theme, "Consolidating the gains of the NYSC
Online Integrated System through Best Practices in the Mobilization
Process".
In
his address, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Gabriel Emmanuel
described NYSC as a "legacy and bridge building programme of the Gen.
Yakubu Gowon's administration, aimed at healing the wounds and restoring the
once robust belief in one united Nigeria which was fatally shattered by the
36-months civil war.
Governor
Emmanuel noted that 44 years after, the "NYSC has played a tremendous role
as a stabilizing factor of the nation's evolution", adding that "as a
signpost of Nigeria's unity and progress", the Scheme has remained
"one of the binding cords which keep us together as a nation."
Udom
Emmanuel who was represented by his deputy, Mr Moses Ekpo explained that the
Pre-mobilization Workshop for the 2017 Batch "B" corps members was
significant in many respects as it served as "a clearing house for all
critical stakeholders in the mobilization process for corps members
nationwide."
Welcoming
the NYSC DG, his staff, all critical stakeholders and partners to the occasion,
the Governor wished them a peaceful and successful stay in the state and
assured his continued support for the progress of the Scheme.
While
delivering his welcome address, the NYSC DG, Brig. Gen SK Kazaure welcomed the
Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr Udom Emmanuel, congratulating him and the
people of the state for the just concluded celebration of the 30th anniversary
of the State.
The
DG pointed out that Pre-mobilization Workshop gathers all stakeholders of the
Scheme at every mobilization year to enlighten them on new improvements and
strategies in the Scheme.
Hear
him, "The forum is usually held at the commencement of every new
mobilization cycle to introduce to stakeholders, new measures and guidelines
put in place for a hitch-free mobilization of Nigerian graduates for national
service....
"The
Pre-mobilization Workshop, among others, provides opportunity for strengthening
inter-agency collaborations towards greater efficiency in the mobilization
process."
The
NYSC DG thanked the Akwa Ibom State Government for making the security and
welfare of corps members a priority and for upgrading facilities at the NYSC
Permanent Orientation Camp.
In
his introductory remarks, the Director, Corps Mobilization, Chief M. O.
Ekpunobi who welcomed guests and participants to the programme, said the
Workshop focused on the process of ICT tools in corps mobilization and assured
the resolve of the Scheme to meet best Standards in discharging its duties.
"In
pursuit of the vision of the present Management of the NYSC to make the Scheme
more innovative and responsive to emerging challenges, this forum is packaged
to provide a platform for us to assess the mobilization aspect of our
operations and fine-tune the efforts aimed at fashioning better ways of making
the process seamless," he said.
The
Workshop was equally attended by technical partners, SIDMACH Technologies Limited,
and critical stakeholders like the regulatory bodies of tertiary institutions,
the National Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical
Education (NBTE) and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) who gave
their updates on what to be expected in the soon-to-come mobilization.
Highpoints
of the event at Emerald Events Centre, Uyo were the presentation of plaques and
souvenirs to the NYSC DG by Governor Emmanuel, the cultural presentation by
serving corps members in the State and presentations by NYSC Band.
