Proverbs 18:24 NKJV
“A man who has friends must himself be friendly, But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
Having been around a little while, and observed people and their everyday relationships, I have come to a conclusion that people fail in marriage because they already began to fail in their day to day relationships as single people.
This is why I make single people understand that marriage doesn't start on the wedding day; marriage started longest time ago, right from the way you related with those ladies in their dormitory or hostel and neighborhood etc. Marriage already started by the way you treated your friends in your football team and in your group as guys. Such that we can see your attitude and behaviors and be able to tell if you will be successful in marriage or not.
Marriage is no magic, it is practical, it is a relationship. So, quit waiting for that special person in marriage to treat right. If you fail to treat persons A, B and C right, there is no chance that you will do any better with your so-called Mr. or Mrs. right. The same goes to those who are already married, don't expect a great marriage when you are not friendly with your spouse. Even Jesus had to make friends out of his disciples at a time for their relationship to move to the next level. He became the friend that sticks closer than a brother when He sent the Holy Spirit. Please note that the Holy Spirit is simply Jesus in another form.
When you practice friendship long enough with your spouse, he or she will soon become a brother or sister to you. It takes a conscious effort and decision to be friendly. This doesn't mean that your spouse will be perfect, no; people do not have to be perfect before you become friendly with them. Let me share a few things that friends do:
-Friends love you for you, and not for what you have.
-Friends play down on your weaknesses and celebrate you regardless. They can mention a lot of reasons why they love you regardless.
-Friends improve each other. They are not afraid to tell you about something you are doing that is not right, all with the aim of improving you and not condemning you. This is why Proverbs 27:17 says that iron sharpens iron. (read from various translations).
Be friendly in Jesus Name.
Assignment/Prayer
i. Lift up your hands and thank God for this wisdom.
ii. Lord I decide by your grace today to be a friend and not a foe to my spouse in Jesus Name.
iii. Lord deliver me from fault finding spirits, and cause me to celebrate my spouse's strengths and good qualities in Jesus Name.
iv. Lord make me a generally friendly person in my everyday relationships in Jesus Name.
