As the Akwa Ibom State 6th House of Assembly winds down the legislative year for a second time, more accolades from the public have gone the way of the Assembly.
The latest of the accolades is from the Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
In a statement signed by the NMA Chairman, Dr. Aniekeme Uwah and made available to newsmen, the NMA commended the House for the passage of two health related bills which it described as very important and vital health.
The association specially appreciated the Speaker of the House, Barr Onofiok Luke for being the lead sponsor of the said bills- being the Primary Healthcare Development Agency and the Akwa Ibom State Health Insurance Scheme and Agency bills.
Outlining the benefits of the bills, the Association said, "the two bills when fully implemented, will make Health services more affordable, available and accessible to our people especially at the grassroot.
"The laws will create an enabling environment for the implementation of the National Health Act and accessing the Basic Health Fund and Save One Million Lives (SOML) funds, to improve access to basic health package for Akwa Ibomites.
"It will also enable the state access funds from NACA for the fight against HIV/AIDS bearing in mind that Akwa Ibom has the second highest HIV/AIDS prevalence in the country".
The medical body also hinted that the laws will also make primary healthcare more effective, adding that this plays a central role in the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and in most of the 13 targets of the third Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), as well as it can contribute substantially to the 16 other SDGs.
The NMA also stressed that the Assembly has done the Association and the entirety of Akwa Ibom masses proud for the political will expressed, as well as efforts invested towards improving the health and overall wellbeing of our people through the passage of the sai bills.
The release stressed that the Association has also noted with great admiration the passage of fifteen (15) out of forty (40) people oriented bills in the 2nd legislative year of the 6th Assembly, adding that such feat has clearly shown that the House is focused and truly the People's Assembly.
While assuring the House of the Association's continuous support and cooperation in all efforts geared towards enhancing the health care delivery system, the NMA further called on the government to ensure competent hands are appointed competent hands to man the agencies created by the laws so as to ensure maximal benefits of these agencies are derived by the people of Akwa Ibom State.
