Akwa Ibom State Students in tertiary institutions have been charged to develop more
interest in the area of research in order to add value to the society.
The Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon (Barr). Onofiok
Luke gave the charge on Tuesday when he played host to the management
team of Obong University.
The speaker noted that academic research
serves as the surest way of developing new knowledge and self-reliance
in solving socio-cultural and political issues affecting the society.
Barr. Luke highlighted that basic research studies will go a long way
in helping students to discover new knowledge which would help in
proffering solution to myriad of societal challenges, and would as well
help a great deal in educational reforms.
He said the 6th assembly
was ready to partner with the university to achieve it's goal. He also
commended the Proprietor of the school, Prof. Moses Akpanudo for his
vision in establishing the university, and the management team for
working in sync with the vision of the founder.
Speaker Onofiok observed
that the coming on board of Obong University has helped to widen access
to tertiary education in the state, and in the same vein making Akwa
Ibom among educationally advantaged states in the federation.
On
his part, the Vice Chancellor, Obong University, Prof. Udo Ekanem lauded
the Speaker on his leadership style, and his passion for human capacity
development.
Prof. Ekanem said the university was impressed with
Barr. Luke for impacting the lives of young people, and for contributing
to the reform of the educational sector in the state.
Prof Udodudo
who gave a brief history of the first private university in the state,
told the Speaker that the institution which is sited in Etim Ekpo local
government area, was fully registered in 2008 by the federal government,
while operational license was granted in 2015.
The VC further disclosed that over 500 students have been enrolled in its academic session.
