The Akwa Ibom State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ)
has concluded arrangements to publish a compendium on local government
administration in the state, to avail members of the public on the
developments and progress of government at the grassroots level.
The Akwa Ibom State council Chairman, Elder Patrick Albert stated this at the recent visit of members of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Akwa Ibom State chapter, led by its Chairman, Rt. Hon. Frank Achibong to the Union at the NUJ state secretariat, Information Drive, Uyo.
While making a remark, Patrick Albert told ALGON that news of developments at the grassroots level were rarely brought to the knowledge of the public and stressed that the compendium which would not be less than 500 pages was going to provide a concrete documentation, in series, the activities, projects and developments executed by local government chairmen in the state.
He alluded to the life-touching and record-breaking achievements of the Transition Chairman of Ikono, Mr Itoro Columba, whose projects were inaugurated by the wife of the state Governor, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel just the previous week, and those of his (Columba's) colleagues which were scattered all over the state, bringing succour to those at the rural areas.
He alerted that the Union was soon going to inaugurate a committee to commence collection, collation and compilation of the compendium which, he said would serve commerce and tourism needs within and outside the state.
Hear him, "In our visit to you, we had understanding with you on two issues. One was this visit and the other was to do a compendium on the activities of local government. Today, you've brought to our notice that IPAC is on the tour.
Part of that compendium will also be on-the-spot assessment by an editorial committee that will be set up by NUJ so that we do documentation in liaison with your Information Officers.
"We have to put up not less than 500 pages compendium on Akwa Ibom State local government. It will also help to give information to tourism and even commerce from outside and within the state.
"I salute you and your colleagues for the wonderful performance in your respective local governments. Barely one week ago, the Chairman of Ikono took the world by the storm when he inaugurated several projects as executed by his administration and I know that you have individually done so."
