The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling
on the state government to consider the construction of flyovers,
roundabout, speed breakers and pedestrians bridges at appropriate road
junctions to curtail incessant and avoidable road accident in the state.
This was part of the resolution sort by the member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency, Rt. Hon Aniekan Uko in a motion titled "Urgent need to provide road traffic control measures at strategic road intersections and junctions in Akwa Ibom State".
Presenting the motion before the House, Hon Uko said he is concerned because of the danger school children are being exposed to, due to lack of pedestrian bridges and traffic wardens to control traffic.
"Motorists and pedestrians, especially school children from the adjourning roads find it difficult to cross the major roads since there are neither pedestrians bridges nor road traffic wardens to control traffic at the junctions thereby exposing them to danger".
Elder Uko said he was disturbed by the number of lives lost to accident and others that may occur at these junctions/intersections if urgent steps are not take to remedy the situation.
He urge the House to call on the state government to direct the Ministry of Works and other relevant agencies to re-evaluate the work earlier done some of the junctions with a view of providing appropriate remedial measures.
Elder Uko who urge the House to mandate relevant government agencies to mount warning signage at these junctions to give direction to motorists and other road users, noted that these junctions put both motorists and pedestrians at risk.
"The state of these junctions at moment put both motorists and pedestrians at risk of being hit while attempting to cross the road, especially where there are no warning signage and traffic control".
The House also urge relevant government agency to direct the posting of road traffic wardens to station at these junctions as a form of interim measures pending when permanent measures would be provided .
