By Samuel Odungide
Politicians don't exist in a vacuum and can not operate in isolation.
There is a popular axiom that captures the similarity of a politician
and the masses - a metaphor.
A society is deserving of the type of leaders it gets. To try to elaborate, one must come to understand that a society can not grow beyond the scope of its leaders intelligence.
Since Nigeria's independence, the country has been wobbling and groping in the dark looking for what is not lost. The system is fighting against itself, so, it is no wonder that we continue to take one step forward and two steps backward.
We, me and you are the architect of our woes and since most of us have concretized in the ideology of self righteousness and grandstand on their ignorance of the machinations of democracy as a form of inclusive governance and ceaselessly submit ourselves to be cojoled, whipng up sentiments, emotional blackmail and stoking the fire of ethnic extremists, we will continue to wallow in poverty of emancipation and sensibility.
A one eyed man is a King in the land of the blind. So, who do we have to call "a one eyed man" and are we to subject ourselves to blindness? We have been ruled by nittwits for too long and daily we cry out CORRUPTION! while the worst corruption is the corruption of the heart.
That, we are all guilty. Let our politicians alone.
I have recently in my quiet moments thought about the problems of our state and the country and how it can be solve so that we can progress from fighting each other or writing insidious petitions to outright malicious accusations and emotional and political blackmail between our leaders and its trickle down effect on the followers who like the blind continue no to see the foibles of their principals/leaders but chose rather to open at least one eye, fall into a ditch.
I suddenly came out of the trance as it dawned on me that we have excellent leaders as politicians. Men of intergrity and finesse. I also discovered that if you train a dog to eat feaces, you will be wicked to hit the dog for eating feaces and be indulging in self delusion to think that the dog ought to know.
Conversely, if you train a dog not to eat feaces, that same dog would detest it and not eat it.
So, we have over the years trained dogs as it were to eat feacses and should we now expect them to suddenly detest the aroma of feaces and perceive meat. No. We have created Monsters amongst ourselves and only us can tame these Monsters.
Days are counting towards another election period and what preludes that is our 'taming' season. CAMPAIGN. I don't bother about what is termed 'opposition' as it is coined to politically plurarize the system and effectively divide and rule us so that their supply of feaces will be sustained.
Let us stop the babbling like Idiots (pardon me) and take our destiny in our own hands and design a template for our leaders to operate upon.
We ceaselessly complain yet we stand stoic and refuse to change and move away from our errors in making selfish and unkind rulers to making better ones even as we hold the change factor on our THUMB.
I hereby absolve all Nigerian politicians of any blame on service delivery and any kind of vice because they are our products.
If they are not good, then when they come to you soon, as surely they will come, scrutinize their intensions. You know them because they live and operate in your locality. Be mindful of their anticedece and character.
Refuse to sustain the supply of feaces. Let's deliberately chose to train a new set of 'Dogs' and put away those that are addicted to feaces rather than what we dictate for them. After all, that is Democracy.
In the Computer world it is said that Garbage in, Garbage out, GIGO. Let Saraki alone, let Buhari alone, let Udom alone, in fact, let Akpabio alone and others.
They are the proud produce of our Country and State. If they rigged elections, it can only be made possible by you consciously or otherwise acquiescing to it one way or the other. You can't run away from your act.
We are all responsible. If a politician gives you money to vote against your conscience and you accept it, should common sense not dictate to you that like an investor, he will fleece you dry in recovering his expenses and justifiably too? He will hate you because he had to bribe you to vote his way.
He will be justified to abandon you the moment elections are over and concentrate in making money.
What justifiable right will you have to call him or her to order when you have sold that right for peanuts already.
A flash in the Pan, then you suffer for years until another opportunity comes and go but you, me still remain in the same spot just waiting for yet another and yet another, till when?
Let us STOP the blame game and evolve a CHANGE that is truly CHANGE.
God Bless Nigeria, God Bless Akwa Ibom State.
