The outcome of the Peoples Democratic Party’s, PDP reconciliatory
meeting convoked by former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday
justified the reasons that the Senator Representing Akwa Ibom South
senatorial district, Senator Nelson Efiong gave for cross carpeting last
January to the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.
Senator Effiong had on a plenary of the senate announced his defection to the All Progressive Congress, citing crisis in his former party, the PDP, explaining that no politician that worth his salt and want to lead his people properly will remain in a dying party like the PDP.
Efiong was later received by his people at Eyo Abasi village few days later, after cross carpeting, and they pledged their continuous support to the Senator and his new party, the APC, in a well attended ceremony.
Yesterday, during the reconciliatory meeting, the National Chairman of PDP, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff had to walked out of the meeting on the reason that as the National Chairman, he was supposed be aware of the planning of the meeting, and he was supposed be given opportunity to make an opening remarks.
Sheriff insisted that he was supposed to preside over the meeting as the National Chairman no matter who called the meeting, and walked out of the Former President Goodluck Jonathan, thereby sending warning signal that the PDP crisis is far from being over.
The situation thereby worsened the current crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party, where many public and former public office holders have already defected to the All Progressive Congress, including many Senators, House of Representatives members, State Houses of Assembly members and some key leaders of the party.
The reconciliatory meeting however ended abruptly after Senator Ali Modu Sheriff had worked out with his supporters, the factional Caretaker Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi was not also recognized to speak at the meeting.
With the latest development which have clearly prove that there is a division in PDP, Senator Nelson Efiong is justified by the law to cross carpet to any other political party, for the interest of the people he represents.
