“For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.”
Marriage has been described as a building in very many quarters. Every
so often, many wise people have described marriage as work, and they are
somewhat correct, because whatever is in a building requires work.
The work is not just needed for the erection of the building, but it is required for the maintenance of the building as well; and so an entry into marriage is an entry into work.
In Proverbs 14:1 we see that God refers to the wife or woman in marriage as one who ought to build her home.
And then our text tells us how every house is built by a man; and I want to take this literally to be a male man. So whichever way you look at it, for both the husband and the wife, all hands have to be on deck.
The big question right now is what kind of work is involved here and how should the couple go about it? Below are a few suggestions on how to make your marriage work.
i) Work on yourself.
Every time your spouse complains and expresses any kind of displeasure, it is a call to work on yourself. You are the greatest problem to yourself in marriage and not your spouse nor the devil. I am of the opinion that if you work on yourself 70% of your marriage problems will go away.
ii) Work on your relationship with God.
You will be frustrated in your relationship with your spouse if you have not yet come under the influence of the Holy Spirit as a person.
He is the one that makes relationship with your spouse possible. Remember; "you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and might, and then you will love your neighbour (your spouse) as yourself.
iii. Help your spouse improve.
Don't just complain about what they are not doing well, assist them in prayer and with positive suggestions on how to do it better. Do not exasperate your spouse with too much criticism.
These and many more that the Holy Spirit will reveal to you will boost your marriage and make it work.
Assignment.
i) Think on these three points and develop strategies to make them work.
ii) Discuss with your spouse and come up with some joint solutions.
