It was a bloody Thursday in Uyo as angry youths invaded the office of
the Akwa Ibom NDDC Director, Dr G.C.Amadi, beating him up in his office
over a dispute surrounding an embezzled allowance.
Attempts by the
police to intervene only made matters worse as the policemen were locked
up inside a toilet at the directors office.
The youths numbering over 50 said they were angry over the illegal diversion of a certain allowance which they alleged Dr Amadi embezzled. Neither Amadi nor the youths were prepared to shed light on the source of conflict.
The invasion caused panic among staff of the NDDC forcing some workers to lock themselves inside their offices while others fled for fear of an escalation of the crisis.
A staff of the commission who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity said he came to work on Thursday and had to meet the State Director on an issue only to discover the director was held hostage in his office by some angry youths.
He could not confirm if the crisis was related to an alleged stealing of 250 Sewing machines meant for women groups in the state but allegedly stolen and sold off by Amadi.
Confirming the incidence, a youth leader who did not want his name in print said, the crisis should be put on the doorstep of Dr Amadi whom he described criminal, barbaric and inhuman, declaring that the NDDC management should remove him from the state for peace to reign, declaring that the youths have given the NDDC State Director 14 days to leave the state, failure of which they will be forced to use whatever means they deem fit to execute the implementation of the ultimatum.
Efforts to get the reaction of the Dr Amadi proved abortive as he did not pick his calls nor responded to text messages sent to his phones. But a director who pleaded anonymity said the commission is aware of the complaints raised and promised to ensure the grievances
