We want to congratulate and appreciate the effort of the Deputy Speaker & member representing Okobo state constituency for yielding to the advocacy and agitations of young Okobo patriots for Constituency Briefing and Empowerment programs.
Even though this event was long overdue after the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA), Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke did his own on Wednesday, 21st December 2016 for the good people of Nsit Ubium State Constituency.
Therefore, our demands became very necessary following the position of our representative as the Second in command after the Speaker, because like the saying goes "what is good for the goose is also good for the gander" is self explanatory.
This event is a ground breaking achievement and encouragement for citizens action and youths advocacy for good governance, considering the fact that such event has never happened in Okobo LGA, because there is no record of such agitations and advocacies by youths in time past for the greater good (Summum Bonum) like we are currently doing.
The Okobo New Dawn Crusaders (ONDAC) is made up of undergraduates and fresh graduates from various academic disciplines ranging from humanities to sciences with different knowledge and exposure and an unquenchable passion for community development.
We hold a world view of good governance, quality and accountable political leadership, particularly at the grassroots which is the foundation and the nucleus of the larger society.
For the event of Wednesday, 26th April 2017 tagged "Constituency Briefing & Empowerment Programs", by simple understanding, Constituency Briefing constitutes informing the constituents of the level of involvement in the primary responsibility of lawmaking which include:
- Bills sponsored and/or co-sponsored & their expected positive impact on the populace.
- Motions moved/presented to address some critical issues of urgent importance like;
* Esuk Inwang (which is a territory of Okobo state constituency) land dispute with Uruan LGA.
* Gully erosion valley at Ekeya and Okopedi.
* Government intervention in Health Care & Educational infrastructures in Okobo.
- Situational report on Ataobong road and Utine-Nduong road.
- Interface with the constituents to afford the electorates the opportunity to ask their representatives questions directly.
- Expectations for the remaining years.
- Empowerment packages to those critically in need ( widows, physically challenged, orphans, youths, students etc).
Notably, appreciable effort was given to one item, " Empowerment Programs", while elements of Constituency Briefing was suppressed and perhaps carried over for 2017 quota as recurrent.
Interestingly, different people have different evaluations for the event, howbeit, we will not despised the days of little beginning.
So, once again, we congratulate Rt. Hon. Felicia Bassey and advice the beneficiaries of the Empowerment Programs for 2016 to make good use of the items for the intended purpose of empowerment and for the glory of God.
Very importantly, we want to tell the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Felicia Bassey that she should keep this up and that this should not be the end of it. As the Akwa Ibom State 2017 Budget has been approved, as constituency allowance will be given, as constituency projects will be approved, and as the Speaker of AKHA and other honourable members of the 6th Assembly will be doing their constituency briefing/empowerment programs for 2017 in due course. Undoubtedly, Okobo state constituency will also expects their own as well.
