Last month there
was a scenario in Ibrahim Badamasi University, Lapai on the issue of
sexual harassment which led to a shameful drama between a student and
her lecturer.
The University management, worried about the
situation and the attendant embarrassment it brought to the University
quickly released the Press Statement bellow setting up a committee to
investigate the matter and make recommendation within one week.
However, for weeks now the committee is yet to finalize its work let alone make a report of the matter. We were told the committee further appealed for extra time.
Ordinarily, an extra time cannot be more than a provisional time for any Committee assigned with a time bound work, but for two weeks now the extra time is yet to be exhausted, the committee is yet to come out with her report from the investigation.
While it is not our intention to preempt the committee with mischief, as we ably understand that the committee has responsible standing public and civil servants, we make bold to state that Justice delayed is Justice denied.
Experience has shown in the past that tertiary institutions unlike government keep to time mandate, and whenever it is otherwise there is the likelihood of bias. We therefore condemn in strong terms the inability of the committee to come out courageously with her report after the time frame.
Today, we shall be at the esteem of the Chairman of Human Rights Commission and Executive Chairman of Egalitarian Africa on this matter. Our joy at the end is to see justice done visibly and to eradicate intimidation of students, sexual harassment of both lecturers and students and human rights abuses in our tertiary institutions.
Please share anywhere it will get to the management of the University.
