Ibrahim Magu
By Michael Adatang
The Senate again rejected the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as the
substantive Chairman of the nation's foremost anti-graft agency, the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) today.
This was as a
result of the State Security Services(SSS) reaffirmation of its position
that the nominee(Magu) lacks the integrity to lead the agency. Read more below...
According to SSS report read on the floor of the Senate by Senator Dino
Melaye, 'Magu has failed the integrity test and will eventually
constitute a liability to the anti-corruption stand of the Federal
Government'.
For the purpose of emphasis, this is the second time the
Senate has rejected Magu's nomination based on the critical report of
the SSS about him. This of course, has raised concern among Nigerians,
as well as the international community, particularly on the implications
of this on the anti-corruption posture of the current administration.
This is the political implications this post sets out to address.
In the first place, Magu's rejection, based on critical reports about
him will boost people's confidence in the EFCC. This is so because the
Presidency's preference for Magu created the impression that the EFCC is
used by the Federal government as a political tool to witch-hunt and
hound political opponents.
This was more so because Magu was and is not
the only qualified or credible Nigerian to head the Commission.
Also, Magu's rejection by the Senate will enhance citizens cooperation
and support for the EFCC. This will be so because of the basic fact that
the citizens will be convinced that the activities of the EFCC will not
be the case of a thief pursuing a thief. They will no longer be
suspicious of the intentions, sincerity and fairness in the activities
of the EFCC.
Furthermore, Magu's rejection will promote
transparency, accountability and openness in the operations of the EFCC.
This is because the new EFCC boss that will be appointed will resume
duties with the consciousness that apart from being accountable to the
President who appointed him or her, other arms of government, such as
the Legislature and Judiciary, as well as other agencies of government,
and indeed the citizens of the country are interested in being informed
about the activities of the EFCC.
This, undoubtedly will facilitate
truthfulness, openness and orderliness in the affairs of the EFCC.
In addition, Magu's rejection will teach Nigerians, and indeed, citizens of other countries(both the leaders and the led) that prudence and contentment pays.
In addition, Magu's rejection will teach Nigerians, and indeed, citizens of other countries(both the leaders and the led) that prudence and contentment pays.
It will bring about behavior modification by
reawakening the citizens to the consciousness that extravagance,
laundering and misappropriation of tax payers money will always hunt
them in the future, no matter how long it may take.
Finally, the
rejection of the nomination of Ibrahim Magu for the EFCC's plum job will
go a long way in reducing impunity, greed and recklessness in
government in Nigeria, and indeed, in the individual lives of citizens.
All these will be in the best interest of the country and our unborn
generations.
God bless Nigeria!
