In what appears a battle line drawn, the Senate has hit hard on the
President Muhammadu Buhari-led Executive arm following the suspension of
confirmation of the 27 resident electoral commissioners (RECs) of the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nominated by the
president.
Senator representing Delta north, Peter Nwaoboshi, on Tuesday, had moved a motion that the exercise be suspended based
on the refusal of the executive to accept the senate’s rejection of
Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC).
In their
submissions, the federal lawmakers who contributed to the debate,
wondered the relevance of their role if the Executive arm could keep
Magu after he was rejected.
President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, who presided over the
plenary, however, pleaded that the confirmation be suspended for two
weeks, which was unanimously approved.
