The PDP chairmanship and councillorship elections flag-off in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area took a different turn as supporters of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon narrowly escaped a mob attack at Etim Ekpo Township Stadium, Utu Etim Ekpo, after suspected thugs launched attacks on them, pelting some people with stones, sticks and other dangerous weapons.
Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon being the current highest political office holder from the Local Government was among top dignitaries to grace the campaign flag-off arrived the venue and was massively welcomed by his teeming supporters who carried various placards to demonstrate their solidarity with the Honourable Member and PDP.
Available sources said the attack was well orchestrated by Godson Uwah on the orders of Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem as a result of the rising profile of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon and for daring to challenge the impunity that has trailed the security crisis in some parts of Etim Ekpo Local Government Area. It took the swift reaction of Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon to restore calm and order he ordered his teeming supporters to remain peaceful and not take laws into their hands.
Witnesses said trouble started when one Godson Uwah, Special Adviser on Electoral Matters to Governor Udom Emmanuel and a known crony of Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem personally ordered thugs to collect and destroy flex banners and other campaign insignias from the youths who accompanied Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon to the venue.
One of the supporter who was beaten by the hired thugs said that the intention is to discredit the Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon and make it look irresponsible and incompetent. But the honourable member has kept his feet on the ground for robust administration and superlative representation. He said that Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon is trusted by the people of Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika Federal Constituency.
The attack on Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ekon and his supporters by the hired thugs was just a tip of the iceberg as the flag-off took a dramatic turn after Barr. Emmanuel Enoidem turned the Local Government campaign to 2019 campaign when he openly said that the House of Representatives seat has been zoned to Abak Local Government Area.
Another witness, who refused to disclose his identity said that the people are taking stock of people who are using their undeserved privileged positions to tarnish the image of the state and federal constituency to stoke tension and make it look investment unworthy. The time of reckoning shall come for the people to choose between the enemies of the federal constituency and those who wish the federal constituency well. 2019 will unmask their ugly faces.
