Governor Udom Emmanuel on monday disclosed that he would consult
members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly with a view to seeking
their legislative input over the planned local government election.
The Governor made the disclosure while addressing PDP stakeholders at
the banquet hall of Government House, Uyo, shortly after they endorsed
him for a second term come 2019.
Though he wasn't specific on the actual
date he intends for the conduct of the local government election, the
body language coming from him during the meeting indicates that he
intends to interface with the lawmakers possibly with a view of seeing
how the elections would be conducted and getting a date, approval for
funding and other matters connected therewith that would put an end to
issues bothering on non conduct of election at the third tier of
government.
"Every body is my person irrespective of what you
believe in. As I'm planning to consult the House of Assembly, yes i must
consult them before i do local government election. Let's try and
respect the zoning system. It will bring a lot of peace and I am a
product of zoning. "
" Let our people not say oh, this is my brother, sister, cousin, and we would have distorted our zoning structure ".
He warned party elders against imposing candidates on the people in the
forth coming election. The governor reasoned that the only Way the true
essence of local government administration would have been advanced was
by allowing the people choose those they want to lead them.
The tenure of the current Transition Committees in the 31 local government councils will soon expire. The Governor had last week sacked two Transition Committees in the state including that of ITU which had Mrs. Elsie Esara as Chairman, and that of Ukanafun which had Mr. Abasiono Udomfu as Chairman.
