Selected public and private secondary schools across the state converged at the Salvation Army Secondary School Akai Ubium in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of the State for a one day workshop on build-a-drone training.
Organised by Global Air Media (youths of the State in diaspora), the
workshop according to the leader of the group, Mr.Eno Umoh was aimed at
training the young ones drawn from primary and secondary schools on how
to build a drone.
Umoh, director and founder of the group, an indigene of Onna Local Government Area said they were in the State in support of the industrialization drive of the Gov Udom Emmanuel led administration who, according to him recorded remarkable strides in the past two years of his stewardship.
Explaining the reason for the drone technology, Umoh highlighted the importance of drone to include ability to inspect hard to reach and remote locations, reduces time needed for traditional survey, inspection, accurate assessment and track progress in real-time.
Responding, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Dr. Nse Udo Essien noted that Nigeria has shown increasing appreciation and understanding of the critical role of Science and Technology in socio-economic development of the nation and has accordingly made efforts in constructing and developing policies to mobilize science and technology for rapid development.
Essien, who was represented by the director of Science, Mr. Gerald Inoh lauded the group on their ingenuity, saying Akwa Ibom State was proud of them assuring that his ministry will partner the group especially in the implementation of the Smart City Project which according to him would aid in the surveillance of the entire State.
The Commissioner stated that there was need for the State to employ this technology considering its huge benefits. "The importance of drone technology cannot be over emphasized.
Its usefulness can be applied to real estate, mapping and survey, construction, film and photography, agriculture and for combating crime".
The administrator, Salvation Army Secondary School, Akai Ubium, Dr. Joseph Akpan expressed gratitude to the organizers of the " Building-a-drone workshop" for choosing the school to host the event.
Dr. Akpan who stated that the school was suitable for both Science and technology oriented projects said the school is blessed with a well equipped science laboratory, ICT Center, Music Auditorium adding that it is one of the few schools in Akwa Ibom that writes computer and data processing at school certificate level.
The administrator however solicited state government assistance in redistributing power from a 27KVA generator from the ICT Center to internet and equipping the workshop for effective teaching of trade courses.
The team was earlier at the permanent site of the University of Uyo along Nwaniba Road where science students were lectured on drone-technology. Highpoints of the event was the building of mini drones by the students assisted by Mr. Eno Umoh
