The Akwa Ibom State Government has announced the immediate shutdown of
Hospital Road, at Midim, in Abak Local Government Area for urgent
intervention and rehabilitation.
Commissioner for Works, Mr Ephraim Inyang-Eyen gave the order when he paid an unscheduled visit to inspect the road which has collapsed to the pressures of a devastating gully erosion by the Obot Street intersection.
The Works Commissioner who conveyed the concern of
Governor Udom Emmanuel to the residents of Abak in general and Midim
village in particular, expressed worry that, the extent of damage is an
existential threat to the inhabitants of the area and their property.
He blamed the collapse on poor drainage system, harping that, this is
reason Governor Udom Emmanuel has directed that no road constructed
under his watch will be done without requisite drainage to receive water
and the proper channeling to an outfall which will pose no danger to
the community or damage to the road.
Commissioner Inyangeyen disclosed that, Hensek Nigeria Limited will be mobilized to site at once to commence emergency remedy work on the road and quickly get it back to use. He accordingly advised the road users to take alternative routes until the repair was done.
Reacting, the Transition Committee Chairman of Abak Local Government, Barrister Emmanuel Udosen thanked Governor Emmanuel for the quick response and expressed confidence the intervention work will be done speedily.
He assured of the continued
support of Abak people to the administration and also conducted the
Commissioner to the ravaging threat of another gully encroaching the old
Abak Bridge by the Tilapia resort.
Commissioner Inyangeyen promised to brief the Governor fully on the development and assured Abak people of Governor Udom Emmanuel' constant preparedness to meet the needs of the people. He called on youths in the area to cooperate with the contractor handling the intervention so that the work will proceed without hitch.
