The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has called on the security
agencies to apply the same measure of force it used to fight insurgency
in Nigeria in fighting the rampaging cases of kidnapping, killing by
herdsmen, cattle rustling, and other criminal behaviors within the
country.
The call was made
on Saturday in a communiqué read by the chairman of the conference and
Speaker of Kebbi State House of Assembly, Abdulmumin Ismaila Kamba,
shortly after a general meeting of the conference in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom
state capital.
While commending the Federal Government of Nigeria
on the successes it has recorded in the fight against corruption, the
Speakers called for synergy among agencies charged with responsibilities
of fighting corruption to do so within the ambits of the law.
The communiqué reads: "The Conference is not unaware of the current role
of the legislature in the fight against corruption in a democracy, it
therefore calls the speedy passage of the bill for whistle blowing in
the national assembly.
"While the conference commends the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the commencement of
the continuous voters' registration, the conference requests that the
exercise should not be limited to local government headquarters alone.
It should also be extended to the various voting centres/units.
"The Conference calls for states to ensure democratically elected structure at the local government level".
The Speakers further inspected production process at the Akwa Ibom
pencil and toothpick factory located within the Uyo metropolis.
