Genesis 26:1 KJV
“And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was
in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the
Philistines unto Gerar.”
In this world, there are
many cycles in life, and one of these cycles is the cycle of famine,
some may call it recession or depression, etc. But in those days, they
were called famine; a time of scarcity, great hardship and even death
due to hunger.
This is a natural occurrence in many places and even in
great nations of the earth; particularly when the leadership of that
nation does not have good hands managing the economy.
But the famine
doesn't affect everyone, and it is possible for an entire family to
suffer from famine or recession only once and for all, such that so much
wealth and goodwill would have been built for it never to happen again.
However, we see that Abraham suffered famine in his own time; he had to
go down to Egypt for help, where he nearly messed up himself.
Isaac on
the other hand, had another famine of his own again, despite the fact
that God had blessed his father in all things, (Genesis 24:1). Then we
see that Jacob suffered financial hardship under the hands of Laban his
uncle and employer. His wages were reviewed downward for ten times.
Lastly, Joseph did not just see famine in Egypt, he actually predicted
it and helped Egypt escape the scourge of hunger and death that would
have occurred.
The pattern of financial hardship was evident, but they
all had to overcome it in their various peculiar ways. Here are the
following ways they individually escaped.
i. Abraham went to
Egypt: This was a downward movement, because years later, when Isaac was
faced with the same situation, God asked him not to go down to Egypt
like his father. Note that it was a downward movement.
ii. Isaac got divine instruction. Genesis 26:2: Open to God's direction and you will beat the pattern of financial hardship.
iii. Sow your way out. Genesis 26:12: Isaac was inspired to sow
regardless of the famine. It is God who gives the increase, but that
will be only when you have sown your seed.
Seed sowing is a law that can
end any kind of famine. Just let God direct you on the way to sow your
seed. (Genesis 8:20-22).
iv. Joseph overcame by spiritual gifts and
wisdom: He was able to interpret the dream of the king by the gift of
word of wisdom and word of knowledge.
Also, by the operation of God's
Spirit and wisdom he proffered solutions to the famine, and that made
Egypt a world power in his days.
v. Jacob overcame by the revelation
of God that gave him wisdom for witty inventions; such that he was able
to come up with animal genetic engineering to take over Laban's farm.
