In what many described as a desperate and unnecessary move to impress the people of Akwa Ibom State, Governor
Udom Emmanuel has scheduled for commissioning the controversial
Eket-Ibeno Road tomorrow, May 24, 2017, amidst the unsettled imbroglio
that ensued over the N8billion counterpart funding by ExxonMobil.
Raising alarm over the development, a chieftain of the Eket Chapter of
All Progressive Congress (APC), Aniekan Akpan, said the State Governor,
has “deliberately cowed the people of the state to believing he has
their interest at heart by his daily deeds.”
According to him,
“there is a failed portion of the road about 1.5km to Esit Urua Bridge,
if you are coming from Eket. The company handling it said it might take
them four months to get it fixed. As we speak, they are still at pilling
stage.”
The chieftain also said “the second bridge at Mkpanak in
Ibeno is still under construction. Isn’t this a scam? Why hurry to
commission a road as sensitive as Eket-Ibeno Road?”
He said “it is
disservice for Ephraim Inyang to advise the State Governor to do what
he is doing to the people of Akwa Ibom. The Ministry has conspired with
the company to stand at the new roundabout at Marina Junction in Eket
for the official commissioning.”
The chieftain wondered why the
Works Commissioner could cause Governor Udom Emmanuel to commission “a
project that is not completed by all specification.”
He further called on residents of the area and commuters to “rise against the abuse of their commonwealth.”
The APC leader said it is now being clear why the government started a war with ExxonMobil over the construction of the road.
The APC leader said it is now being clear why the government started a war with ExxonMobil over the construction of the road.
“ExxonMobil said they gave N8Billion to assist in the construction of the road. The government went mad, destroying billboards of ExxonMobil. Did the government or the contractor not receive the money from ExxonMobil? The government said it used N46B for the uncompleted road. They should show us the evidence of the money by completing the road first before commissioning.”
