The Akwa Ibom State Governor Mr Udom Emmanuel, has commissioned the
refurbished Children’s
Department/Sexual Assault Referral Centre, at
Immanuel Hospital as well as flagged off reconstruction of Psychiatric
Hospital Eket, with a promise to return the Immanuel Hospital to glory
days within the next twelve months.
Addressing the stakeholders of
Eket local government at the premises of the hospital on Wednesday, the
governor said he was waiting for the eight containers conveying medical
equipment to be brought and off loaded before he moves into Eket
hospital to give it a new lease of life.
He said his
administration was impressed with Mrs Tombush Peter Umah, a daughter of
the soil, for refurbishing the Children’s Ward/Sexual Assault Referral
Centre at Immanuel Hospital, challenging the internet, online as well as
social media goons to rather channel their resources into refurbishing,
encouraging and supporting medical facilities for the good of Akwa Ibom
people instead of tarnishing the hard earned image of public officials
in the social media on daily basis.
While hoping to come back to
commission more projects, he urged persons to put themselves in the
shoes of those persons whose children, relations or wards were faced
with rape experiences, charging that persons who are exposed to rape
cases should report to the hospital for immediate care, free of charge.
The governor urged the Acting Chief Judge to expedite action on rape
cases brought before his court to bring sanity, justice to bear and
spare the vulnerable children of the state such experiences.
In his
opening remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Dominic Ukpong thanked
the governor for commissioning the new facilities as well as Mrs
Tombush Peter for plunging her resources to refurbish the Children’s
Ward of the 66 years old hospital.
He told the people that the
governor has a big plan for Immanuel Hospital evidenced in the new Model
of the Psychiatric centre of the hospital to be constructed in Eket.
He stated that the eight containers of hospital equipment ordered by the
state government had since arrived and were being off loaded.
Speaking, the member representing Eket in the House of Assembly, Hon
David Lawrence applauded the governor for doing so well for Eket people
pointing at Urban renewal of Eket roads, Esit Urua and Oron roads,
Eket-Ibeno road and other projects. He assured the governor that Eket
people will reciprocate the governor’s magnanimity when the time comes.
In her remarks, Mrs Tombush Peter said her contribution to refurbish
the Children’s Ward and the Sexual Assault Referral Centre was her way
of adding value to the lives of the children of the area and Akwa Ibom
State and also to ensure that children were handled in a clean
environment.
In her goodwill message, Hon Justice Mrs Theresa Obot
thanked the governor for coming to commission the Children’s Ward and
Sexual Assault Referral Centre, adding that the hospital was a centre of
excellence.
She said the Referral Centre has been refurbished by the State government with support from the British Council.
