In a bid to improve the primary healthcare system in Akwa Ibom State,
Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA) during today, Tuesday plenary
passed the Akwa Ibom State Healthcare Development Agency Bill into Law.
The passage of bill followed a comprehensive report presented by the Chairman House Committee on Health, Hon. Monday Eyo.
In his presentation, the Uyo Lawmaker noted that the Committee had held series of meetings which culminated in the decision of the committee to hold a Public Hearing on Friday, March 3, 2017, before arriving at the report.
According to the Uyo mouthpiece, the committee had observed that the bill when passed into law will guarantee that medical treatment is based on needs and not on the income of an individual, introduce affordable Medicare that ensures reasonably equitable access to primary medical services in the state, amongst other laudable benefits that will enrich the state.
However, the law which takes effect immediately from today, May 30th, was a private membership bill sponsored by the Speaker, and member representing Nsit Ubium State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Onofiok Luke.
In his remarks, the Speaker, Onofiok Luke commended the committee for their well exercise energy on the report.
He equally commended the lawmakers, public and all healthcare departments in the state that contributed their quota during the processes that culminated into the passage of the bill into law.
He noted that the law will improve the primary healthcare delivery services in the state, even as he assured that the AKHA will continue to pass more of such bills into law to further strengthen the healthcare system in the state.
