The member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency in the Akwa
Ibom State House of Assembly,Rt.Hon.(Elder)Aniekan Uko today at plenary
has again made case for the safety of lives of Akwa Ibom people through
his latest motion on the Urgent need to provide Road Traffic Control
Measures at Strategic Road Intersections and Junctions in Akwa Ibom State.
Worried by the situation,the Ibesikpo Asutan mouthpiece while leading the debate on the motion said that the zeal of the state Government toward infrastructural development especially in the area of road constriction and urban renewal,as evidenced in several road projects and urban beautification projects embarked upon by both past and present governments,it will be suicidal for the roads to turn death track.
Elder Uko also observed that some of the roads,especially the ring roads currently under construction and the ones constructed in the past were made to pass through or cross already established roads,thereby forming crossroads and open uncontrolled road intersections or junctions.
Narrating further,the Ibesikpo Asutan spokesman cited two accident scenes that occurred just last week,when a cyclist suffered head injuries after being hit by a car,while trying to negotiate his way through Nung OKU park road to the Goodluck Jonathan way;and a similar case at Aka Etinan/Goodluck Jonathan toad junction,where many passengers sustained injuries and a tricycle rider lost his life after being hit by a speeding commercial vehicle while attempting to cross over to Etinan road.
The motion having gained the support of the honourable members,the Speaker Rt.Hon.(Barr.)Onofiok Luke directed the Clerk to subject it to the relevant committee for further legislative actions.
Speaking to newsmen who cornered him in his office after plenary,the astute lawmaker maintained that his duty is to feel the pulse of those he is representing by making sure the protection of their precious lives is always paramount.
He expressed optimism in the calibre of lawmakers that constitutes the 6th assembly,describing them as"representatives with their people at heart".
