The Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Onofiok Luke has offered insight to why the House is committed to making deeper its relationship with the Executive arm of government.
Speaker Luke who gave the insight today when the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs and Water Resources, Rt Hon Ekong Sampson paid the House a courtesy visit noted that since partnership between the Executive and the legislature is imperative to the advancement of democracy and important for the development of the State, the House of Assembly was ready to not only explore the partnership, but deepen it for the benefit of Akwa Ibom people.
While stressing that the partnership does not suggest being subservient to the Executive, the Speaker explained that through the said partnership, the House will continue to give nod to requests from the Governor which will help in the development of the State.
He stated that besides such approvals, the House will make laws that will aid the Executive in its drive to develop the State.
He added " Partnership is imperative for the dispense of democracy. It is only in atmosphere of cooperation we can have development. The people didn't elect us to have poor relationship with the Executive or engage in fisticuffs.
" We want to state here that we have never extorted government to be able to discharge our functions. We have seen the result of the cooperation we have given to the Executive thus the zeal to enter into next phase of cooperation."
The Speaker appreciated the reciprocation on the part of the Executive by always respecting the positions of House and also pointed out that with the emergence of Rt Hon Ekong Sampson who has served in the House for a two term period and now as Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, they have found in him what he described as a dependable partner.
Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs and Water Resources, Rt Hon Ekong Sampson said the visit was to appreciate the cooperation the House has extended to the Governor which he said has been instrumental to the achievements recorded by the Governor Udom Emmanuel administration.
He added "without the support, the governor may not have achieved what it has achieved. Watching the House proceedings from a distance, the House is really doing well.
The range and depth of discourses does not fail to impress some of us who have travelled this road.
I have said severally that other Houses of Assembly should learn from Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly."
While seeking for deeper partnership, the Special Adviser said the partnership will help the State advance for the prosperity of the people and admiration of other States.
