The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON in Akwa Ibom
State has stated that the completion of projects undertaken at the
Secretariat of the Akwa Ibom State Council of Nigeria Union of
Journalists is a task that should not only be left for journalists
rather should be seen as a business that demands commitment from
everyone.
This Statement was made today when members of ALGON in the State visited NUJ Secretariat to have on the spot assessment of ongoing projects.
In his speech, the Chairman of ALGON in the State, Rt Hon Frank Archibong noted that with the kind of " meaningful and lifetime" projects undertaken at the NUJ Secretariat, ALGON was convinced that the projects are worth supporting by all to a completion.
He said "The completion of the NUJ Secretariat should be everybody's business. Development should be everybody's business. The level of development here, and the facilities I have seen shows how organized NUJ is.
"I don't think there are many States that can boast of facilities like these. All hands must be on deck to make sure these projects are actualized . ALGON's hand is on deck. It is a work in progress and we enjoin others to join".
In his response, the Chairman of NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, Elder Patrick Albert thanked ALGON for their support so pledged noting that his administration decided to develop the NUJ Secretariat so as to meet with the evolving demands of the media industry.
The Chairman explained that the support from ALGON and other stakeholders to the completion of the NUJ Secretariat will add to the vibrancy of the media community in the State.
He added " NUJ is an important body to the making of a model society. The more organized NUJ is, the more Journalists will be be alert to bring about quality reportage to benefit the Society.
" Since the beginning of my administration in 2013, I have always espoused the fact that it is not good for the society, government and other stakeholders to see or keep journalists afar but should see us a partners. We are not bystanders.
"Journalists must be brought in to build the society. We need to be encouraged and enabled to carry out our functions effectively. We are happy we now have better understanding with stakeholders of the society."
The NUJ Secretariat is currently witnessing the construction of a two-storey Office Complex with the roofing recently completed.
