A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday sentenced one Azubuike Ogonor to death by hanging.
Ogonor a native of Ahoada local government area of the state was sentenced to death for the murder of one Blessing Iyumame, who was his lover.
Justice Chioma Ada Okirie, who gave the verdict, said Ogonor admitted that he committed the crime in two separate statements he made to the police and prison officials. The statements were tendered in court.
According to the statements, the convict killed Iyumame by pouring petrol on her and struck matches that ignited fire and burnt the victim.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the judgement, the prosecuting counsel, Chijioke Boms, said the court has done justice to the case, adding that people should not take laws into their hands no matter the provocation.
