Ahead of the forthcoming 2018 National Census in the country, the
Federal Commissioner, National Population Commission, NPC, in Akwa Ibom
State, Chief (Engr) Benedict Ukpong has called on the indigenes and
residents of Urue Offong/Oruko Local Government Area to come out in
large numbers during the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) exercise in
the area.
Engr Ukpong, himself an indigene of Urue Offong/Oruko, explained that EAD exercise which involve counting of houses and buildings is the basis for the planning and execution of the general population census and appealed to the people to cooperate with the enumerators and advised against undue interference during the exercise.
The NPC Commissioner made the call last Sunday during the stakeholders meeting of the Urue Offong/Oruko chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the party secretariat, Ukuko, along East West road.
Ukpong said the commission under his leadership was committed to the overall interest of the State, noting that census was of utmost importance as it serves as bedrock for meaningful development in any society.
The NPC boss in the State who said the rationale behind census is to ascertain the true population of the people, assured that the exercise would be devoid of ethnic and party lines.
He thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for his appointment and other appointees from Akwa Ibom State, ranging from Mr Umana Okon Umana, Nsima Ekere, Ita Enang, Udoma Udoma and Samuel Frank as well as Engr Ita Awak, among others.
It would be recalled the third phase of enumeration area demarcation in Akwa Ibom State ended recently in Nsit Ibom local government area.
